Stuffing or dressing balls look festive and save space on the table. Plus, stuffing balls taste great and have more of the baked area like the edges of a baked pan of turkey stuffing. All guests who love the corner and sides pieces of the traditional casserole stuffing will be thrilled with individual balls of stuffing.
Southern Dressing Ball Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 loaf of white sandwich bread
- 1 can of turkey or chicken broth (amount varies with amount of bread)
- ½ cup melted butter
- 2 eggs beaten
- 1 onion chopped fine
- 2 stalks celery chopped fine
- 1 small bell pepper chopped fine (optional)
- 2 tsp poultry seasoning
- 1 tsp sage
- ½ tsp thyme
- 1 tsp salt (or seasoning salt of choice)
- ½ tsp pepper
*Note: Seasonings can be adjusted to taste with more or less listed depending on how zippy family and friends like turkey dressing balls.
Directions:
- The night before (or a few hours before making stuffing balls), tear bread into small bite-sized pieces and let dry in large bowl. The bowl of bread can be left on the cabinet with a towel over the bowl or placed in the refrigerator.
- Pour enough turkey or chicken broth over bread so that it is moist enough to hold a shape, but do not add enough to have soupy dressing, or it’s hard to shape the balls. More bread can be added if too much broth is added.
- Drizzle melted butter over moist bread and mix and toss.
- Add the beaten eggs and again stir lightly so that the eggs are mixed through and can serve as extra binding.
- Add onion, celery, and bell pepper and stir just enough to have the vegetables mixed in evenly.
- Sprinkle in seasonings and toss or lightly stir to get the flavors throughout the dressing mixture.
- Using your hands or an ice cream scoop, shape dressing into balls about 2 inches in size. They can be made smaller or larger but cooking times need to be adjusted depending on size of dressing balls.
- The dressing balls can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator the day before or can be frozen for up to a month. Just be sure to thaw the dressing balls for an hour or so before baking them.
- Bake at 375 degrees F for around a half hour. If baking a turkey or other dishes, it’s fine to bake at other temperatures but add or subtract time depending on baking temperature.
- The white bread dressing balls should be lightly browned when done and not gooey in the middle.
