Pinto beans have tended to be the default bean in the South, but heirloom beans have kept a range of interesting beans on the front burner even if in niche areas. In addition, the Tex-Mex influence has helped push other beans on the map like black beans.
Black beans have always been a favorite around here even before many people locally were eating them. Black beans are smaller and not as sticky as the classic Southern beans like the Pintos.
We were eating black beans before they came of age (mostly in place of refried Pintos in the area). I’d use black beans as a side dish or in chili with a mix of beans or make Black Bean Dip which is one of our family favorites.
Now I am seeing Black Bean Dip sold in stores, but I still prefer to make my own. Making Black Bean Dip is super easy, and the fresh made Tex-Mex Black Dean Dip is definitely tastier than the processed store bought Black Dean Dips with additives and preservatives.
