Cheerwine is a North Carolina soft drink with a distinctly different name and flavor.

If you travel through North Carolina, you will likely see an unusual soda pop sold in red cans or in old fashioned soda bottles with the oval Cheerwine logo. Cheerwine is also available at many restaurants in the Carolinas.

Just recently the company has been expanding with Cheerwine offered in more states and through more outlets. The cherry flavored based soda has long been a hit in the Atlanta area, along the coast in the South as well as in Virginia. Most recently, Cheerwine has been added to the menu of Brother Jimmy’s Barbecue in New York City (a restaurant featuring North Carolina style barbecue).

Is Cheerwine a Soda or a Wine?

The name of the “cherry different soft drink” can be confusing to those from outside the South. The most common question for those unfamiliar with the product is, “Well, is it a wine?”

Even though the name of the soda includes the word wine, Cheerwine is not an alcoholic beverage.

In the early days of soft drink development, drinks were often named in terms of appearance. A good example would be root beer. It’s fairly common knowledge that root beer is not a beer. It simply looks a bit like beer.

Cheerwine has the bright red color of grape wines and lots of bubbles, so the creator named it Cheerwine for the “happy” bubbles and then the wine part for the color.

Is Cheerwine a New Soft Drink Beverage?

Although Cheerwine is “new” in many areas, it’s an old soft drink. In fact, Cheerwine dates back to 1917 but wasn’t trademarked until 1926.

Lewis D. Peeler, a businessman from Salisbury, NC, had an interest in soda mixing and also a building that was convenient to the railroad line. When Peeler was offered a chance to buy out a Kentucky syrup company that marketed a mint soda, he decided to get into the soft drink business. He named his company Carolina Bottling Company.

Initially, Peeler sold the mint sodas, but he also played around with his own concoctions. After he purchased some cherry flavoring, he found that he could create a sweeter tasting soda without having to add more sugar (which was in short supply in the early 1900s).

Peeler’s Cheerwine quickly began outselling the original mint soda. Over time, a diet version and a caffeine version were added. Carolina Bottling Company sells other soft drinks as well as an energy drink called Savage.

What Does Cheerwine Taste Like?

It’s difficult to capture the flavor of Cheerwine with words. It is sometimes referred to as a cherry cola, but that really doesn’t do the beverage justice. The almond based cherry flavoring gives it a very unique flavor.

There are many Cheerwine fans. One local lunch counter worker said she sells Cheerwine two to one over other drinks. A postal worker reports getting boxes of Cheerwine to mail from Southerners who like to share the soda with family and friends in other parts of the country. Ironically, it costs more to mail the soda than it costs to buy the soda.

A teenager from Cleveland, NC says, “Cheerwine is the best soda ever.”

On the other hand, a senior citizen from the area says he’s not sure what all the “fuss” is about. “It tastes like cough medicine to me,” he says.

Cheerwine is More Than a Soft Drink – It’s a Lifestyle Statement

If you want a good conversation in the South (especially North Carolina - and very specifically historic Salisbury, NC), just bring up Cheerwine. Locals love to talk about the weather, politics, and Cheerwine.

You’ll hear about good times – barbecues, NASCAR trips, backyard parties and other wonderful Cheerwine moments. Cheerwine spells “good times” for fans, and the company has always been small and supportive of local community projects. That leaves a good taste in everyone’s mouth.

I first tasted Cheerwine 3 yrs ago, my husband, James H. Webb is from the area, he purchased some for us and now I so wish Cheerwine was sold here in the area of Rogers, Arkansas. Jim's oldest daughter, Deena tried to surprise us by sending us some Cheerwine for Christmas. Well it never made it here, I just imagine if anyone found out what was in the package they kept it for themselves. For one taste and you are hooked, well at least I am. Cordially, love for Cheerwine fans (Jim and Lynnaia Webb 523 Crystal St. Lowell, AR 72745)

I'm was from N.C., but now i've live in Louisiana for the last 10 year. Every time I visted my family up there I would get 12 cases of CHEERWINE and 12 cases of SUN DROP. When I would sit drown to drink a CHEERWINE OR sit drown to drink a SUN DROP it would make me miss home. It CHEERWINE and SUN DROP that make North Carolina great. Have you had a CHEERWINE at the race or getting up player from Caldwell County to play people from Burke County in Tackle Football or Basketball. I grow up on CHEERWINE and SUN DROP, it bring back great memory. I'm 42 now. Paul Holman ,122 Hemlock Circle, West Monroe, LA 71291

I remember seeing Cheerwine commercials when I was young. There was one in particular that motivated me to search for it online. It was a "valley girl" type ad and I had everyword memorized at the ripe old age of 7. If anyone knows the commercial I am referring to and knows where I can find it please email the link to me @ garrettjulie75@yahoo.com
Thanks alot.

Cheerwine, to me, tastes like a black cherry soda with a hint of maraschino cherry. I love it. Even better is a cheerwine float with (NC local) maola vanilla ice cream. Yum. Or if you are a real cherry lover maola cherry vanilla ice cream float. I also think it's tasty and refreshing when mixed with equal amounts of limeaid. Makes sort of a fuzzy cherry-limeaid. Or give it a shot of pomegrante juice, lemon juice, and cook a slice of ham in it over the stove. Makes a really tasty sauce.

They sell Cheerwine here in South Georgia, and I actually find it really easy to describe the taste. It's like a really strong cherry cola...with emphasis on the cherry. Like you made a cherry coke with equal amounts of maraschino juice to cola. Just how I like it. Delicious but I don't dri k it everyday as it's really sweet.

Thank you for posting this article for others who don't live in the south. I am actually from Salisbury, NC. Sometimes I think us Salisburians take it for granted because all the Cheerwine we want is at the tips of our fingers. My favorite is the glass-bottles Cheerwine, which you can hardly find anymore since only a couple stores carry it. Ms. Allison, I commend you for your terriffic write up and informing people that it is in fact a soda and not an alcoholic beverage. I have some friends who live in FL and whenever they come up or I go down there, they always get some Cheerwine stocked up from me. I acutally had some for lunch today!

I lived in Charlotte NC when i was a kid back in the early 70's. I moved from there to CA in 1976. When I found I couldn't have a Cheerwine in San Jose I wanted to move back. It was 20 yrs later in 1996 that I finally got back to NC and once again had a Cheerwine. It was as I remembered in from my youth, it was all I drank (except when mother made me drink milk) It is simply the best soda on the planet!!!
