If you need a pretty dessert but aren't real skilled at decorating or do not have time, this pudding cake is just the ticket.

There are various punch bowl style cakes served in the South. The original idea was that these cakes were layered in old glass punch bowls which seem seldom to be used these days. The various layers of the cakes could be seen through the sides of the pretty glass punch bowls.

Since many cooks do not own punch bowl sets, the idea is often modified with various types of bowls and containers. Clear bowls still make the prettiest presentation, but any large bowl works fine.

This cake recipe is a chocolate version. Other cake and pudding flavors can be substituted, but it is hard to beat the Chocolate Pudding cake version.

Chocolate Pudding Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 box chocolate cake baked according to directions
  • 2 boxes of instant chocolate pudding mixed according to directions (1 small size 4 serving and 1 large 6 serving box)
  • 1 can or bottle of Hershey’s chocolate (16 oz. or to taste preference)
  • 1 container of Cool Whip (16 oz)
  • nuts or sprinkles (optional)

Directions:

  1. Break cooled chocolate cake into bite sized pieces and place half of the cake pieces in the bottom of a large punch or other type bowl.
  2. Pour chocolate syrup over cake. Amounts can vary depending on how chocolaty the family likes desserts.
  3. Spoon half of the chocolate pudding (not chilled – just whipped until slightly thick) over the cake layer.
  4. Use a clean spoon to carefully spread half the Cool Whip over the pudding.
  5. Repeat the layers – cake, chocolate, pudding, Cool Whip.
  6. Sprinkle on nuts or colored baking sprinkles or drizzle a little chocolate syrup on top.
  7. Chill and serve.

* Note: The ingredients can be divided into fancy glasses and served as indvidual desserts as well. It just takes longer to assemble them in small amounts.
