Who needs a Hamburger Helper mix when it is so simple to whip up a homemade hamburger skillet recipe?

Goulash is not a traditional Southern dish. Goulash is a recipe from Hungary which is basically a meat or vegetable stew served over noodles. But, Southern cooks do borrow ideas, and an easy meat and pasta combo dish is common in the South for dinner. Easy Pasta and Hamburger Goulash borrows from the Hungarian theme, but it’s a quicker and easier version and quite similar to Hamburger Helper dinners but made up fresh.

There are many versions of Goulash across the South. The main theme in the South is that the ingredients are cooked, combined in a skillet, and then served up hot with a salad and bread of some type. It makes for a stick-to-your-ribs meal that is tasty and goes over well with kids.

Southern Pasta and Ground Beef Goulash Recipe

  • 1 box of spiral noodles (8 ounces) – cooked and drained (can use macaroni or rigatoni noodles instead)

  • ½ cup onions – chopped
  • ½ cup green peppers – chopped
  • ½ cup celery – chopped
  • 2 cans diced or petite diced tomatoes (14.5 ounces or close on size) – do not drain off liquid
  • 1 can condensed tomato soup (10 ounce)
  • 1/2 teaspoon seasoning salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning mix (or other favorites)

Directions:

  1. Cook pasta according to package directions, but go to the low end of the cooking time, since the pasta will cook a bit more in the skillet.

  3. Cook ground beef in a skillet and drain off extra fat.
  4. Add onions, green peppers, and celery to the skillet and cook until tender.
